January 31, 2001 STEERING THE ARGUMENT IN THE RIGHT DIRECTIONKeith Codes Latest Rider Technology Proves its what Bikers Do with Their Bars, Not Their Bodies, That Turns the Bike (Los Angeles, CA) Teaching proper steering technology may mean the difference between avoiding an object, and hitting it. According to accident reconstruction investigative reports, in the vast majority of rider vs. obstacle conflicts, the rider doesn't even attempt an evasive steering action that could have saved them. Much of this inaction can be blamed on conflicting information on how the motorcycle steering function works, which can lead to rider panic and uncertainty in emergency situations. Now, Keith Code, the foremost motorcycle riding Riding Coach in the world, and founder of the world-renowned California Superbike School, is ending the steering controversy with the introduction of his new No Body Steering Bike (No B.S. Bike). This specially designed bike proves that only steering (and not Body Steering/leaning) turns a bike. This new rider technology will increase a riders speed and confidence while improving their cornering skills. There has been endless theories and speculations put forth for years regarding the steering of a motorcycle, says Keith Code. Can you just lean and have the motorcycle go where you want it to go? Is counter-steering valid at all? What about Body Steering? I knew the theories of leaning and Body Steering werent true and set out to prove that steering comes from the bars. Code researched the fundamentals of counter steering from the Wright Brothers, who observed counter-steering and its effect on tandem wheeled vehicles in the early 1900s, to studies done by Honda Motor Company in the 1970s. Following extensive analysis, Code began building the No B.S. Bike, a mid-sized ZX 6R Kawasaki. Code added an extra set of handlebars, solidly mounted to the frame above the standard bars, then added a second, functional throttle to the extra bar assembly so riders could maintain speed once the solid bars are grasped. Over 100 students have tested their Body Steering/Leaning methods on the No B.S. Bike. All came away with the same irrefutable conclusion: Body Steering and leaning do not steer the motorcycle. No matter what students have done on the No B.S. Bike to change directions, the bike simply does not turn. The No B.S. Bike is now used at all of Code's Superbike Schools to clarify this important point for his students. Recognized as the worlds top authority on motorcycle riding instruction, Keith Code has spent the last 25 years consistently setting the standard for innovation in the motorcycle rider-training industry. In 1980, he founded the California Superbike School (CSS) with the goal of creating the most comprehensive school for motorcycle enthusiasts. He has since instructed over 50,000 people in the art of cornering motorcycles, including dozens of champions. Keith strives to empower his students with the understanding that leads to confidence on the motorcycle, as well as the skills to maintain that poise.
